That evening, inside the stables, when they were mucking stalls, Davis asked Lucas what he thought of his first practice.

“Very good. And it feels like I’ve known everyone for a long time.”

“That happens when you are a chosen,” explained Davis. “We are connected to one another and feel a strong bond, like brothers. It’s what the king looks for during the test. Some of us will create that bond before the test, some of us during, but if we don’t feel a bond at all, we drop our heads and will not look at the boy. That let’s the king know that he is not a true chosen one. If only some of us do, then they will look at fighting skills, willpower, strength and base their decision on that. We look out for each other and stick together. If one of us gets disciplined, we all do. The officers know we accept that, and they keep us in line that way. It also means they have us under stricter rules than the elite borns. Since we are more united, they believe it makes us more dangerous.”

“How does it make us more dangerous?” asked Lucas.

Davis shrugged and threw some fresh straw down before exiting the stall and moving on to the next one. “I guess, if we were to truly unite as a group in a fight, there would be no stopping us.”

“Is that not a good thing?”

“It would depend on who we were fighting and why. They know we will protect each other at any cost, and against anyone.”

“Do the elite borns have a bond like we do?” asked Lucas, following him out.

“They do, but it’s different. As chosens, we all view each other as equals and don’t choose a leader. The elite borns are more individually driven to be the best. It creates rivalry amongst those who are born leaders. Right now, it is Eli who is their leader, but Carleton looks to be a close second.”

“What happened during my test?” asked Lucas.

“Yours was very different than the last few we have experienced,” Zera chimed in when they met her at the back of the stables to collect hay for feeding. “All the boys felt the connection when you were in the hole. Even my brother here—although he would not like to admit that.” She gave Lucas a wink when Davis playfully pushed her and continued. “Warrick and I knew you were a chosen from the moment we saw you at the prison transport.”

“I sure did,” a voice suddenly said behind them. When all three turned they saw Warrick, joyfully walking up the aisle towards them. “Never thought that would ever happen.”

“You’re already finished in your stables?” asked Davis.

“Almost,” answered Warrick. “Tanner and Archer said they’d finish up for me. You know how they work better together.”

“That may be because you talk incessantly and distract them, and then they get into trouble for being too slow,” responded Davis.

“That’s not my fault. I still get my work done.”

“Anyway,” said Zera, “we were just answering some of Lucas’s questions.
